Since we’re here at NAR, we thought we’d kick off a few posts about the conference by starting with a little history of the conference.

Who doesn’t love nostalgia, right?

This year’s NAR Conference in Orlando marks more than 100 years an event that has taken place just about every year since 1908. In fact, the only time it was canceled was in 1944 – when efforts went to supporting the war instead.

As with modern day NAR Conferences, the 1908 event brought Realtors together from all over the country and the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges was born. The name of this group has changed through the years: to the National Association of Real Estate Boards at the 1916 conference and then finally to its present name of the National Association of Realtors at the 1974 conference.

Although the number of people attending the NAR Conference has grown over the years, the main goals have changed little since 1908. These include:

Education about realty issues and concerns: Industry experts always give a variety of presentations and lectures about the hot topics in real estate. During the conference in 1913, the code of ethics and standards of practice followed by NAR members was developed.

Vendors: Although there probably weren’t as many vendors at the first NAR conferences, some were probably present. In modern times, the conference has become an ideal place for Realtors to learn about and get a hands-on look at the latest in Real Estate technology.

Networking: Always a primary advantage of every NAR Conference, networking is encouraged and brings together the ideas and best practices agents and brokers are seeing around the country.

The annual NAR Conference is the biggest and arguably the most important of realty industry conferences in the country. We’re thrilled to be a part of it this year and while we’re setting the course for the future in real estate, we’re glad we could take you back to the past for a bit.
